The County Department of Social Services through Federal and State Statutes provides public assistance through Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Old Age Pension (OAP), Aide to the Blind (AB) and Aide to the Needy and Disabled (AND). Other forms of assistance provided through the department of Social Services are the Quest card, Low Energy Assistance Program (LEAP), Medicaid and donated foods. Services provided to families and children include child protective services, adoption, day care and family self-support. Services for adults involve self-sufficiency of the aged or disabled and protection of adults to protect their own interests. Funding for the County Department of Social Services is primarily Federal and State with county funding from zero to 100 percent based upon the type of program.

2006 Accomplishments

  • Low Income Energy Assistance provided to 1,436 households for a total benefit of $894,975.
  • Adult financial assistance was provided to 332 individuals; adult medical assistance was provided to 505 individuals; family medical assistance provided to 783 households; long term care assistance provided to 378 individuals; Workforce development service was given to 331 individuals.
  • Employment First services provided to 203 individuals.
  • Colorado Works assistance provided to 126 households.
  • Food Assistance provided to 2,500 people for a total amount in excess of $2,900,000.
  • Child Support Collections projected to be in excess of $1,900,000
  • Approximately 296 children received core services designed to keep them out of placement. This resulted in intact families and considerable amount of savings to taxpayers.
  • Approximately 511 child protection referrals were received in the last 12 months.
  • The various programs underwent a total of 11 reviews and audits and all were passed.

2007 Goals

  • Plan, design and construct new Department of Human Services building. Included will be new phone and data systems and the purchase of new office equipment and furnishings compatible with the new facility.
  • The purchase and integration of videoconferencing equipment. This will be accomplished either as a link with the central county site or an independent site.
  • To complete a year within budget and within the four State program allocations: Administration, TANF, Child Care and Child Welfare.
