Police K-9 Units are used for important reasons:

With their exceptional ability to smell odors that humans cannot, K-9's are used for:

• Detection of narcotics
• Evidence searches
• Searching for humans in buildings and open areas

Since K-9's run much faster than humans, the use of a K-9 allows for quick apprehension of a suspect. As most humans have a natural fear of a dog that will bite, this sometimes allows the officers to neutralize a situation without having to use physical or deadly force when apprehending suspects.
