Phil West , Road & Bridge Director

Phil West, Director of the Alamosa County Road Department, is a Colorado Native. He was born in Alamosa and has lived here for the greater part of his life.

Phil's many years of experience and vast knowledge of road construction includes 35 years of road maintenance and construction working for Colorado Department of Transportation where he worked as Heavy Equipment Operator in Alamosa until the fall of 1997 when he transferred to Fairplay as Supervisor for 7 years. He then lived and worked as supervisor in Dillon for ten years, where his office was located at the Eisenhower Tunnel. He retired as Supervisor in 1995. He was then employed as manager for a well drilling company in Dillon, Colorado until the spring of 1977 when he began his career for Alamosa County. As Director of the Road and Bridge Department for Alamosa County, Phil has taken great pride in the accomplishments that have been made.

Phil & his wife, Gaynell, both graduated from Alamosa High School, married in Alamosa, and all three children, Kathy Alejo, Karen Neinas and Philip West were all born here. Kathy and Karen both graduated with masters Degrees from Adams State College and Philip graduated with a Masters Degree from CU. Kathy has been a 6th grade teacher at Ortega Middle School in Alamosa for the past 10 years; Her husband is Asst. Superintendent for Conejos County School District. Karen, along with her husband owns and operates Colorado 2nd largest rafting company in Canon City and Philip is a 2nd grade teacher and lives with his wife (a reading specialist in Parker Public Schools) and two children in Parker, Co. Between the three children, Phil, has been blessed with 9 (so far) grandchildren.

Phil's latest passion is restoring antique tractors. He also loves fishing, traveling and his four dogs.

Phil's greatest desire for Alamosa County is to eventually have all county roads paved. Phil loves his job and has no plans to retire"again" any time soon.
