The center will not take messages for inmates unless it is a confirmed emergency! Inmates have telephones in their cells to contact people on the outside. Calls to bondspersons and the public defender are free. All other calls can be made via jail calling card, or collect. Outside calling cards will not work on our phone system
From the time a person is arrested to the time they are booked into the center may take several hours depending on the amount of inmate functions handled at any one time. Callers to the detention center inquiring on whether a person is in jail will have their questions answered regarding the amount of bond and or charges filed. Once the arrestee is processed and the booking information is obtained, then and only then, will the arrestee be allowed to call family members.
Property may be dropped off for inmates or picked up from inmates at any time except during the stated closing for meals and medication. Inmates are allowed 3 changes of underwear and socks in their possession. All T-Shirts must be solid colors with no names, logos, or pictures. No other items will be allowed.
If you are bringing money for inmates to use for commissary, it must be in the form of cash or money order. No checks will be accepted.

The inmates are provided a library for their use. They are allowed two books in their cell area at one time. They are also allowed the Bible (English or Spanish), The Book of Mormon or the Koran. We accept book donations to the inmate library, but not to a specific inmate.
By statute the Alamosa County Detention Center charges SENTENCED inmates for their stay in the facility. The daily cost for this jail time amounts to $63.53 per day. The Detention Center also charges a statutory booking and bond fee. The booking fee is $30.00, the bonding fee is $10.00.
These fees are not included in the cost of care daily fee and are charged for un-sentenced inmates. When a sentenced inmate is released, he/she will be directed to go to the administrative area of the Sheriff’s Office to either pay their cost of care in full or make payment arrangements.

The detention center staff is not allowed to tell you what bondsperson to use. The only thing they will instruct you to do is look in the telephone book and pick the bondsperson of your choice.
Inmates may be released in several different ways. They have the opportunity to post a cash bond, a surety bond or a personal recognizance bond. All bonds are posted in the jail but the property bond must be otained through the courts. Cash bonds are just that - cash. If the bond amount is $50,000.00 you pay $50,000.00 in cash plus the booking and bond fees and the person is released. A surety bond is done through a bondsperson.
-
If the bond is $50,000.00, you may pay up to $7,500.00 to a bondsperson and they guarantee your appearance in court. Part of this guarantee is that you have to post, or give something of value to the bondsperson to satisfy the balance owed. The $7,500.00 in not refundable. It is the cost of going through a bondsperson. Property bonds are done through the court, require an appraisal of the property and it takes time to complete.
-
Personal recognizance bonds are usually handled by the court and basically release a person from jail on his/her word (promise) to reappear in court on the proper day. The amount of the bond is scheduled by the court and cannot be changed by detention staff.
The Alamosa County Detention Center offers several programs to their inmates. Sentenced inmates can apply to obtain their G.E.D. while in the center. They can apply for counseling for addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. They can also apply to be a trusty while being held in our center. Trusty status is a position where the inmate works around the center during his/her incarceration. Compensation for this work and the fact that the inmate follows the rules of the center allows the inmate to receive good time.
The detention center staff also allow inmates to take part in the center's inmate work crew. This crew performs community service projects to the people of Alamosa County. To date they have cleaned several miles of roadside trash and helped clean properties which fall in the counties blight ordinance.
