J. Michael Rogers, Coroner
Mike
grew up in Alamosa, Colorado, graduated from Alamosa High School
and then attended Adams State
College. He graduated from San Francisco
College of Mortuary Science with an A. A. Degree in 1972 also
getting licensed as a Mortuary Science Practitioner in 1972. Mike
worked
in Denver from 1972 to 1978 when he returned to Alamosa. He is
a certified Mortuary Science Practitioner through the Colorado
Funeral Service Board, Licensed as a Funeral Director and Embalmer
in Arizona and a Certified Funeral Service Practitioner through
the Academy of Professional Funeral Service.
In 1978 Mike joined
the Alamosa County Coroner's Office as Chief Deputy. Originally
elected in 1982 Mike has been re-elected and
served each term since that time. He became a Certified Death
Investigator the first year it was offered and have maintained continuing
education
through the Colorado Coroners Association, St. Louis University,
and University of New Mexico Medical legal seminars. He is a
member of the Colorado Coroners Association since its inception and
currently
serving on the Board of Directors as Vice President and as a
member of the Coroner Assist Team.
Mike and Kathy have five children, Kevin
(Emma), Jason (Trish), Stephanie, (Troy), Pam (Micah), Kate and
6 grandchildren. He has owned and operated
Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa, Manassa and Monte Vista since
1983. He is a current member and past president of Alamosa Rotary
Club, a former response team member and currently treasurer of
San Luis Valley Hazardous Substance Board.
Mike serves on the
Board of Directors for Blue Peaks Developmentally Disabled Services,
Member and former Treasurer of San Luis Valley
Peace Officers Association. He retired as Assistant Fire Chief
of the Alamosa Fire Department after 21 years, being certified
as Firefighter
I and II and Driver Operator. He is past president of the Alamosa
Firefighters Association, past secretary of the San Luis Valley
Firefighters Association and served on the tournament committee
for the Colorado
State Firefighters Association for several years.
Mike is also
a member and past president of the Colorado Funeral Directors Association
and is currently chairman of the disaster
committee. He serves as Policy Board Representative for Colorado
to the National
Funeral Directors Association and Vice President of the Colorado
Coroners Association. A mortuary officer of Region VIII,
National Disaster Medical System, DMORT team Mike has responded to
air
disasters of Korean Air Flight 801 in Guam, Alaska Air 261
in California and
the World Trade Center terrorist attack in New York City
.
