COMMISSIONERS > Meet the Commissioners
Darius Allen - District One 2005– 2008
Darius
Allen enjoys farming and cattle ranching and continues to be involved
in
the cutting and reining horse business. He has lived
in the valley for 29 years. Although he has lived in other states
and had other jobs, he has always felt that the SLV was great
place to raise a family and always wanted to return. Darius and his
wife,
a teacher, have raised three children together. All three have
attended Alamosa schools.
Why a commissioner? Darius felt he could
make a difference. He strive to make improvements throughout the
county. Whether large
or small
projects he continuously works to make tax dollar and stretch
as far possible and to get the biggest bang for the buck. The next
four years are going to be exciting time. He and the other commissioners
will be working on projects and improvements throughout
the County. They will be working on the jail and public safety
(with the City of Alamosa).
Darius serves on 15 different boards
including NACO) National Association for Counties and serves on
all four insurance approval boards for
the State of Colorado. He also owns several businesses in town.
Commissioner
Allen has been an Alamosa County Commissioner eight years and is
presently the Chairman of the Alamosa County Board
of Commissioners and the CCI Southern District. He is also Chairman
of the San Luis Valley Solid Waste Authority Board and is also
a
member of the Public Lands Steering Committee, Agriculture Steering
Committee, Land Use Committee, Airport Board of Control for the
San Luis Valley Regional Airport, Alamosa Senior Citizen Board,
San Luis
Valley E-911 Telephone Authority Board, member of the San Luis
Valley County Commissioners Association, Alamosa County Events
and Facilities
Local Marketing Board, Nursing Advisory Board, Alamosa County Board
of Adjustment, Alamosa County Tourism and Development Board, San
Luis Valley Resource Conservation and Development Board and the
Museum and Cultural Center Board.
During his tenure he has championed
the need for a mobile tire shredder. With the assistance of the
Colorado Department of Local
Affairs and
in conjunction with the San Luis Valley Solid Waste Authority,
Alamosa County, under the leadership of Commissioner Allen, will
purchase
a mobile unit on behalf of local governments.
Because of his involvement and success with the mobile tire shredder,
he has been nominated for a Colorado Pollution Prevention award.
The tire shredder has the capability of shredding 2,000 tires
in one hour; hence forth having the ability to reduce tire pollution
in the State.
Commissioner Allen currently serves on all four
County Technical Services Inc. Boards, County Health Pool, CAPP,
County Workers
Compensation Pool, and County Technical Services Inc. Having
a background in the
insurance industry, Commissioner Allen extensively researched
the increasing costs of health care. Due to this research, he
was able
to guide the pool in giving a discount to employees. With counties
budgets receiving reductions in revenues, and in today’s
health insurance market it is unheard of to have virtually no
increase in
insurance costs for two years in a row. Commissioner Allen has
worked hard to try to maintain this type of trend in the County
Health Pool.
Commissioner Allen has become very involved in assisting the
local Museum Board to obtain a building for their future home,
assisting
our local Senior Citizens Center with new kitchen equipment and
dining room, landscaping and purchasing outside tables for this
new center.
Commissioner Allen is ran unopposed in the 2004 election.
His constituents have seen the strong leadership he provides
to the
County of Alamosa
and are very satisfied with his work. |
